About Us

What a joy it is to introduce you to our church! You will discover that our passion is deeply embedded in the people who gather at Christ United. We strive to be a community experiencing the transforming grace of Jesus Christ, as we become disciples who help others connect to Jesus.

Our history has been one of transformation since July, 1961, when twenty-three people met with Reverend J. Willard Leggett, III in the living room of the original parsonage to form the city's newest Methodist Church.  What followed has been a remarkable history of growth through the power of Jesus Christ and His prevenient grace.  In February of 1962, over 100 members moved into the original building at 5301 Old Canton Road. the membership continued to grow so rapidly that by 2000 it was apparent that a new facility was needed. Since there was no more property available for expansion, a building program was undertaken and the new site at 6000 Old Canton Road was completed in 2004. Today, Dr. Bob Rambo serves as senior lead pastor, the church's eighth.

Numbers, however, tell just some of the story.  Our history is filled with involvement in local, state, and national mission projects. Jackson's flood of 1979 was a defining moment in our church's life. Christ United became a leader in flood relief in North Jackson.  The church became a staging area for the distribution of relief and building supplies.  As one local minister said, "Christ United became a model of how we should respond in times of crisis."  Most importantly our church learned how to care for one another in the name of Jesus.  We drew on that lesson when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005.  Our facility became a distribution center for relief materials as well as sending numerous work teams to aid in the recovery efforts.

Christ United is involved in hands on ministries ranging from Jackson midtown center to missions in Costa Rica, Kenya, Peru, Russia, Haiti and Honduras. It continues to serve as an active participant with Chastain Middle School in the Adopt-a-School program. Through events such as these, Christ United found expression for its genuine concern - to its own members and for the community as whole, living into our overarching vision to restore lives, families, and community. This mission remains at the heart of who we are as we reach out to others to make disciple of Jesus Christ who know him, love him, and serve him.

Our mission statement tells what is at the core of our existence: Connecting people to Jesus so that lives, families, and community can be restored.  In short, we are learners and followers of Christ who are committed to real relationships and making other disciples.  The doors of Christ United are wide open to people from all backgrounds, regardless of where they are on their discipleship journey. To reflect the mission, our goal is to generously infuse life and God's love into individuals, families and the community through Christ encountering worship, intentional discipleship with real hospitality.

So whether you are just beginning to ask questions about a spiritual journey or actively seeking a deeper knowledge of what it means to be a disciple, you can find a home here at Christ United Methodist Church.

In the meantime, you will find information through this site that will aid in connecting you to a community of people who are here to help you discover the pathway to discipleship.
